Not wired, not wireless… but powerline
Okay let’s talk internet. It’s pretty much the lifeline of the world’s information these days - when the internet goes down, it somehow seems as though the world stops spinning until it gets back up again. Having said that, it’s still not always a simple and pain-free thing to set up in your home, especially if you want to have more than one computer hooked up to the internet.
So, there are two options, right? Wired, or wireless. Well, it turns out, that’s wrong. There’s a third option now, and it’s sort of in-between those two options. It’s a wall socket adapter that gives you almost the same freedom of a wireless internet signal so you can use it for more than one computer, or other media device - but it saves you the hassle of setting up a complicated wireless system.
The idea is simple. Instead of running a cable all through your home from your modem or router - or rewiring your whole house to achieve the same thing - you send your internet traffic through your home’s electric wires.
The adapter is hooked up to your modem or router, and then you simply plug it into regular wall outlets (the very same ones you would plug your kettle or hairdryer into). Then take another one, plug it into another electrical socket, connect that to another computer, and you’re done. No extra wires, no fiddling around with setting up a wireless signal. You’re online.
You can also connect more adapters around the home if you need it. Let’s say you don’t have room for a printer near any of your computers, but you still want to be able to print out documents at home. You can leave your computers in the office or bedroom, and then have your printer in the living room, but still connected through these adapters. And this seems to be especially handy for those who find wireless just doesn’t suit their needs. A below-ground basement is often a great space to set up an office, but it’s usually a dead-zone for internet signals, and wireless internet just doesn’t work for those situations. With these adapters, the problem should be solved.
Your internet data goes through the power lines in your house on a different frequency than electricity, so nothing should happen to your lights or appliances. There is one downside though. The adapters don’t work when you plug it into a powerbar. They need to be plugged directly into a wall socket, and you might not have one near where you keep your computer or other multimedia devices. So, before looking into this option, you’ll want to check that out.
